From QUEER to QUEERING: From identity to a progressive verb

As individuals, we know that a queer identity constantly presents challenges. However, as a collective, it becomes clear that identity categories and their acceptance only contribute to a limited extent to bringing about fundamental change towards an inclusive world. We must take action both as individuals and as a collective. Are we perpetuating existing exclusion without being aware of it because we are doing the same thing in rainbow colors?

Queering as a verb in the progressive form allows us to understand our practices as processes and to try things out. A queer inclusive world currently exists only in the imagination; it requires experimentation, a trial run that shows us whether our actions, at least for the time being, create more space for plural forms of expression.

In this artist talk, queer tango takes center stage as a foil for reflection. From the perspective of this queering practice, there is much to be done—not only in society as a whole, but also within collectives.

Als Einzelpersonen wissen wir, dass eine queere Identität eine*n immer wieder vor Herausforderungen stellt. Im Kollektiv wird allerdings ersichtlich, dass Identitätskategorien und deren Akzeptanz nur bedingt dazu beitragen, grundlegende Veränderung hin zu einer inklusiven Welt zu bewerkstelligen. Wir müssen etwas tun sowohl als Einzelpersonen als auch als Kollektive. Schreiben wir die bestehende Exklusion weiter, ohne uns dessen bewusst zu sein, weil wir das gleiche nur in Regenbogenfarben tun?

Queering als Verb in Verlaufsform erlaubt, unsere Praktiken in Prozessen befindlich zu verstehen und Dinge auszuprobieren. Eine queere inklusive Welt besteht derzeit nur in der Vorstellung, es bedarf eines Ausprobierens, einer Probe, die uns zeigt, ob unser Tun, zumindest vorläufig, mehr Platz für plurale Ausdrucksweisen herstellt.

In diesem Artist Talk steht Queer Tango als Reflexionsfolie im Zentrum. Aus Sicht dieser queerenden Praxis gibt es viel zu tun - nicht nur im gesamtgesellschaftlichen Umfeld, sondern auch innerhalb der Kollektive.
