Artist Showcase: a practice of freedom

International guest artists Kay Mcdonald & Carmel Farahbakhsh showcasing their current work-in-progress.

Carmel is an expressive, inspired and revered musician, violinist, composer and performer. They will curate the sonic pieces of this work in progress. Kay is a curious and convicted performer, mover and interdisciplinary artist, who will be using their body/voice as their main tools of creation. Together, as “new suns collective”, they

create immersive and experimental collaborative performance works that transmute time and place. The piece of work they are furthering in its evolution is entitled “a practice of freedom”.

 

About the artists

Kay Macdonald is an African Nova Scotian, Queer, Trans community facilitator, educator, activist, facilitator, curator and multi disciplinary performance artist born and raised in Kjipuktuk, Mi’kma’ki. Recently, Kay has developed a multi disciplinary piece of work entitled Unicorn with support from The Bus Stop Theatre’s Writers

Circle. Kay has also accepted the role as Co-Artistic Director at Kinetic Dance.

Carmel Farahbakhsh (aka Saydah Ruz) is a sound artist, composer, violinist, performer interested in the aural mystery of a queered prayer, forever examining how to create multidimensional calls to pleasure, self, ritual, healing that reverberate through their trans experience and echo into their second-gen Iranian cultural reality.

Carmel is also a community educator, arts maker, and youth worker. As well as, the Executive Director at The Youth Project. They have collaborated on the Khyber Centre for the Arts board for five years, and hold a position as co-director of local music festival EVERYSEEKER.
