"Tapping the box and looking up at the sky, a sparrow appears"; "a hand gesture imitating a blooming flower shifts immediately into a pointing motion, where pampas grass begins to bloom."

Inspired by “kairaishi”, the Japanese dance of the puppet master—one who manipulates and is simultaneously manipulated—this work explores imagination and the plasticity of action.

Just as mass seems to vanish the moment a URL is referenced, and just as prompts function like spells or prosthetic bodies, how and where can a lightly drifting body move fluidly?

Even the slightest blink might cause the scene to shift, to disappear somewhere, becoming suddenly intangible.

This is a search for a process—of slipping out of the fixed and singular, toward a state of elusive plasticity.

Shoya Fukunaga has studied computer science, media technology, and performing arts in Japan, and works as a dancer, choreographer, and lighting designer.
